Did you know we might finally find out what's hiding inside the core of a neutron star? These things are the incredibly dense remnants of massive dead stars: pack the mass of a few suns into a sphere the size of a city! The pressure is so insane that atoms get crushed into a soup of neutral neutrons. But here is the wild part: scientists think that deeper down in the core, the pressure might be so high that it creates a bizarre state of exotic matter that hasn't existed since right after the Big Bang, like a quark core. And we can actually 'see' this by studying the gravitational waves emitted when two neutron stars spiral into each other and merge. Their tidal forces distort each other's shapes before the explosion, leaving an imprint on the waves! This blows my mind.
