Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin is set to captivate listeners once again with the announcement of her fourth studio album, 'The Gem', slated for release on September 25th via 4AD. Accompanying this exciting news, Jacklin has also unveiled the album's first single, "Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon)," a track that pays homage to the vibrant Melbourne sound she discovered after relocating from Sydney in 2017.
The album's creation was a deeply personal and immersive journey, recorded entirely in Melbourne alongside co-producer Robert Muinos at Rat Shack studios. This unique space, nestled above a Collingwood bar aptly named The Gem, became the heart of the project. Jacklin enlisted the talents of friends Jacob Diamond (guitar), Mimi Gilbert (bass), and Jess Elwood (drums), extending the recording sessions to nearly a year – a significant departure from her initial two-week plan. "The Gem felt like a metaphor for the whole process, because a lot of it did feel like digging," Jacklin shared, reflecting on the challenging yet rewarding experience. "I felt like I was doing it almost in the dark, just trusting I was going to find something."
The Gem bar itself holds a special place in Jacklin's story, serving as an early touchstone during her time in Melbourne. She vividly recalls discovering a small venue where bands would push dining tables aside to perform on the floor, an experience that pushed her out of her comfort zone and helped her embrace the city as home. This spirit of intimate collaboration permeated the recording process, with the band working in converted hotel rooms above the pub, often with the sounds of a neighboring hairdresser and live music from downstairs blending into their creative space. Before committing the songs to tape, they even tested the material with two unannounced shows at The Gem.
Fans will have an early opportunity to hear new material from 'The Gem' as Jacklin embarks on a short solo tour of UK and Irish indie stores later this month, with dates including Brighton (June 29), London (June 30), Liverpool (July 2), and Nottingham (July 3). A more extensive North American, UK, and European tour is scheduled to follow from October 2026 through 2027, featuring a notable London performance at Eventim Apollo on February 19, 2027.
Adding a memorable touch to the album's journey, the band commemorated their efforts on the final day of sessions by getting matching tattoos. A small circle representing an opal, Jacklin's favorite gemstone, was inked by one of the bartenders from The Gem. "It did really feel like we’d done something special together," she remarked. "I’m glad we all have these little gems on us." This forthcoming album marks Jacklin's first original studio work since her critically acclaimed 2022 release, 'Pre Pleasure', which garnered numerous award nominations.
