I swear my LinkedIn feed is now totally AI-generated - AI posts, comments, likes everything. My Reddit feed - also probably not human. That dreamy synth track everyone in my class’s looping? Maybe not from a band. And don't forget countless accounts on Pinterest and Instagram with fully AI-generated photos....
We’re living in a Gen-Z fever dream where the lines between what's 'created' and what's 'generated' are completely blurred, and honestly, it’s getting spooky. Not even in an adventurous way.
Like, think about synthetic influencers, perfect, algorithm-designed people. Lil Miquela doesn't have bad skin days or controversial tweets because she literally can't. My friend Tanya says she follows them because they're 'pure aesthetic goals' and she knows they aren't selling a fake life, because it's all fake, 100% of the time. It’s the transparency of the fake that somehow feels more authentic than human influencers desperately trying to look candid. Wild, right?
But then there's the art crisis. When I can type "Hyper-realistic portrait of a sad cyberpunk cat wearing a beanie, in the style of Van Gogh" and get a masterpiece in three seconds, what's the point of spending four years in art school?
My hot take is this:
AI art is amazing wallpaper, but it lacks soul. It’s super smart, but it's never been heartbroken. It doesn't know what it’s like to miss a deadline or feel that gut-punch of finally getting an idea right.
It’s a perfect mimic, not a flawed human. And to me, that human messiness—the emotion, the struggle ---- it ---- is --- what makes art real.
The truly top question here is this: What will the future of authenticity be about - something being human-made? Maybe it’ll be about something being human-chosen. If a million people choose to cry to an AI-generated ballad, does the origin story matter? Or does the collective feeling make it real?
We’re the generation that grew up knowing everything online could be fake. Now, we have to decide if we even care. Are we cool with a beautiful, soulless world, or will we start paying extra for the 'Handmade by a Flawed Human' tag? I'm not sure yet, not sure if I'm even ready for the chaos.
