Just caught that new body horror thriller 'Slanted' and honestly, I'm so disappointed. The premise had major potential, a Chinese American girl undergoing extreme, terrifying surgery to appear white could have been a sharp, biting commentary on assimilation, beauty standards, and internalized racism. But instead of giving us something fresh or thought-provoking, the movie completely botches the narrative. It relies so heavily on tired, dated tropes that it ends up feeling like a pale, uninspired pastiche of much better genre films. We deserve nuanced stories about the Asian American experience, especially in horror, but this just missed the mark entirely. A huge missed opportunity for elevated horror.
